Almost 13 months...

me and my ..., originally uploaded by jannacybill.

Elias was 22 lbs 4 oz and 29 inches in December.

Drum roll, please....

Now he's at 24 lbs and 30 3/4 inches!

He's at the 75th percentile for both. He feels like he should be off the charts, but I think that's because he grew so fast in such a short amount of time.

Is it the whole milk he's drinking now??

Thanks, Gus

Gus, thank you for you.

Thank you for not making me change your diaper anymore. Your pullups are dry these days, and you're even waking up at night to go potty. All I can say is, there is some something greater than I that has led you down this path, and I am so grateful.

Thank you for still wanting to snuggle with me, even in your increasing "I do it myself" phase.

Thanks for giving me a kiss when I ask, or for letting me down easy when it's just not the right time.

Thanks for waking up from a nap in the car this weekend to suddenly ask, "Mama, what does this face mean?" (giving me a sour, surprised, shaking head face) It was so deliciously random, I was rolling.

Thanks for flexing your independence and making yourself peanut butter cracker sandwiches. With an adult butter knife.

Thanks for waking up on Saturday and wanting to go to see the dinosaurs at the Field Museum. Because you let me sleep in, and because we didn't leave the house until 11:30, and becuase we had to drive around first to see if we could park close, and because we didn't eat lunch right away since you wanted to watch some Mexican dancers performing, and because we had to see the dinosaurs before we ate, and because we had to wait in line forever to get our food....because of all of that, I was tapped on the shoulder at the restaurant by a dear college friend whom I have not seen in almost 10 years, who just happened to be at the museum with her family, who had a seven-hour layover at O'Hare, on their way to Florida. Because of all of that, I now can contact my friend, who I have been trying to find on Google for a long time.

Thank you for adopting a new good night routine of recounting three things we're grateful for today. Perspective is good, and I need a huge dose of happy perspective after this past month.

Downstairs

Ok, Eli barely says Mama anymore, he won't sign 'more' since he always wants more and probably thinks it's silly to keep repeating himself, BUT. The kid says DOWNSTAIRS. And signs it, too.

I'm totally serious.

And the pivoting. We have a full-on walker on our hands, and he can change directions without falling these days. He walks at least forty paces or more from the couch all the way to the kitchen, then turns around, goes around the dining room table, then walks straight into my arms for the biggest, sweetest hugs where he tilts his head and leans it towards me to rest on my chest. If I look down, I can see the warmest grin, and my heart melts over and over.

Lest you be lulled into a false sense of calm with this sweet story, have I mentioned the back-arching tantrums? They are short, but powerful. The boy has will...and I love every ounce of it. When Gus takes toys away from Eli, which seems to happen more often than not, Eli will protest. A lot. He's even started coming after Gus, either grabbing him or throwing his body on him. The physicalness between the two is astounding.

Then comes the frequent sweet, calm, empathetic moments, where Gus will quietly whisper to Eli, saying, "Hi, my pumpkin," and will kiss him tenderly on the forehead.

(thought I better end on a *sigh* note)

Gus love

Gus love, originally uploaded by jannacybill.

John went in to studio today, so I stayed home with Gus and Eli. Both were diagnosed with ear infections on Thursday, so while they're definitely on the mend, it was nice to just stay in pajamas and play. I was a bit apprehensive about today, because both have needed a lot of individual attention the past week, but today couldn't have gone better. I mean, I got both down for naps around the same time. A true miracle.
(so there's dirty dishes in the sink...but I got Gus to help me clean out the toy baskets, so that tradeoff was worthwhile.)

Gus is beyond engaging these days. He is enthusiastic, inquisitive, full of opinions and will, and has quite the comedic timing. He's throwing words like 'fragile' and 'plan' at me, he asks me what things are and what they do, and he's becoming quite the compromiser when it comes to getting a cookie or eating some Pirate's Booty ("I'll eat two bites of my sandwich, then I can have Booty!")

Tonight as I put some lip gloss on, he said, "Mama, you're so pretty."
*sigh*
