103.4

It's the kind of thing where you keep calm on the outside but you kind of lose your shit a little on the inside.

Gus is on the couch with me, lounging in his diaper. He went to bed around eight, but when I went up to check on him at ten, he was steaming up, so I got him up to give him Motrin. The poor kid has had a fever off and on since early Sunday. I thought this was associated with his croup from last week (he's had a doozy of a two weeks), but seems to be something else.

The 30 minutes to an hour after giving Motrin are the most stressful. Will the medicine work? What will we do if it doesn't?

This time, it did. Gotta put him back in bed because he's laughing now and it's 11:03pm.

What a huge difference an hour makes.

Croup

I wish that the name for croup didn't sound like what it was.

We took Gus to the doctor last Monday with a horrilbe raspy, barky cough, topped with some labored breathing.

Croup.

I stayed home with him on Monday and Tuesday, while John subsequently stared feeling sick and struggeled the rest of the week. Gus has to have breathing treatments twice a day, and happily does so after we play a Baby Einstein DVD, with the volume turned up extra loud so he can still hear it over the noise of the treatment machine.

We went out of town this weekend, to Galena. I have many great pictures to share, but that will have to wait until I can stay awake. Gus came down with a fever again last night, and went to bed with a high one, so I must scoot off and check on my boy.

In the meantime, enjoy the new design (still a bit in progress, but getting closer!).

slowly but surely...

I'm pulling it together here.

I'm using a new version of my publishing system and I'm going to have to import all the older entries. Fingers crossed.

it's too good not to mention our day. John, Gus and I went to a nature preserve around two miles away from our place. We brought some food, had a picnic on a peninsula that jutted out into a pond. We watched seven turtles sunning themselves. We watched a little boy scoot out over the water on this enormous tree that had fallen.

Embarassing moment? Realizing tonight that pretty much the only thing that got sunburned was the underside of my forearms. How does that happen, since it has never happeend before? it's called eating, and I apparently had my hands up to my mouth quite often.

Best line of the day?

*fart*
"Hey Gus, did you hear that duck?"
*I look at John with that, you know, 'look'*
"What? I'm a Dad, I'm supposed to say stuff like that."

i'll post pics later, i have a sick kid on my hands, sleeping next to me on the couch, coughing up what appears to be a lung.

where is it?

We must be very, very careful.

It only takes one time of us doing something before Gus is copying our actions. Most of the time this works to our favor, like this new action. Let's say we have a napkin... and then we drop it.

Where is it??

Gus is so expressive these days... his eyebrows have suddenly become quite active, like he suddenly understands the power of facial expressions. Some other tricks:

-If there is something that needs to be thrown away, if we ask Gus to do it, he'll throw it away with a smile (we're not teaching him to fetch the newspaper or get a beer, don't worry)
-Tonight at the grocery store, we walked by the apples and suddenly, for the first time, Gus looks at me and signed the sweetest apple sign I've ever seen. It goes to show that even though he may not sign something right away, he's taking it in!
-Gus is eating just about anything...if he feels like it. Guacamole, smoked salmon, pumpkin muffins, all the way to cheerios. But when he doesn't like something, it doesn't stay in his mouth long. He follows the spitting out with a clear shake of the head and a 'no'. At least he tries...
-He is obsessed with being outside and is quite unhappy when we go inside. He loves to walk up and down the sidewalk, look at flowers, point out PLANE and look for birds.
-Some things Gus is signing: milk, cookie, play, upstairs/downstairs, zeppo, apple (!), more, please, boat, turtle, horse, kangaroo (a favorite!), monkey, book, train, sock, bunny, bird, duck, dog, finished, food, water, pig, mama, papa, grandma, hat, diaper (sometimes...), ball, brushing teeth, soap, fish, plane
-Some things Gus is saying: mama, papa, more, cracker, cookie, car, plane, shoe, NO !
