I believe.

"Have you been a good boy this year?" Santa asked.

Gus stared, nodding.

My heart concurred.

Toys

"Why do we talk to Santa?" I asked.

"We ask him for toys," said Gus.

"Why do we ask him for toys?" I asked.

"Because Santa will say YES," he replied.

A chomper is coming in

Crackers: YUM, originally uploaded by jannacybill.

Top.
Front.
Middle.
Right.

It's rearing itself and coming in fast.
It is a big one. John says it's because Eli's his son.

I feel like Eli stored up a bunch of show stoppers for our holiday break together. The first tooth, crawling on all fours (bye bye commando), picking up Cheerios nimbly (and now in handfuls) and standing without holding on to anything (ok, for 30 seconds, and only my Mom saw it...).

And oh, did I mention we think he's said 'Papa' and 'Mama'? And he has signed 'more' on occasion, and it looks like he's signing 'milk' now, too?

Caution, folks. Wear your safety hats. It's a developmental explosion zone.

Gramps, check him out

Interpretations, anyone?

Last night I dreamed I was at the entrance of a job fair. I was with another co-worker. We were talking to a person who was 'manning' the door. I don't remember much, but I do remember this: I was confused as to why I was there, but planned on going in until I looked down to see what I was wearing. From out of my long, black winter coat, I saw that I was wearing Gustav's red and white stripped Christmas pajamas. I asked my co-worker if she thought it was okay for me to wear them.

Umm, not so much.

Working mother anxiety dream? or is the Christmas spirit hitting me early?

Thankful that the Thanksgiving is coming

My Mom reminded me that it has been 11 whole days since I've posted to BabyDays. Back before I had two children, I would be reminded after one or two, but she's definitely cutting me some slack right about now. Thanks, Mom. :)

It's not for lack of desire that I stay away. I have a running commentary in my head, on a daily basis, of all the things I want to be sure to capture. Oh, Gus said this... or Eli did this, but the tired. It has gotten me. Now I am fighting my way back to words, where as of recent pictures have sufficed.

We've recently battled the second coming of the double ear infections with Eli. About a month ago, he suffered terribly high fevers for about a week, and finally antibiotics seemed to turn him around. This past week, though, saw a resurgence of infection. The doctor was none too pleased, and ordered a series of antibiotic shots to get rid of this sitting abomination. After three days of shots, he seems to be on the mend, both physically and in spirit. Eli now is jabbering up a storm, leaving me to wonder if his hearing had been plugged up this past month. It's amazing. We swear he's saying hi, and are pretty sure he said Papa at least once. It will be amazing to listen to Gus and Eli chat...

Eli is starting to crawl on his hands and knees more and more, and there's no surface he can't pull himself up on. He's starting to cruise across the furniture, and if we hold his hands, he walks pretty well. Is this the point where I mention I'm freaking out about the movement? My head has not gotten into the baby proofing game again, so I find that he's literally telling me what I need to do to make it safe for him (like, maybe don't put Eli down when Zeppo's food is down? don't leave my barrettes lying around? tuck the extension cords away?)

Gus is one big conversation. His imagination is rich, his language even richer. The past couple of days,he has started to ask me what we're doing or where we're going, which signals to me that this is a kid who is ripe for a calendar of his very own. We'll make one of those for the fridge.

Ever since we started using the toothbrushing chart, we have been able to get into Gus' mouth with relative ease. I keep waiting for the pull of the sticker to disappear, but so far it's sticking (no pun intended, seriously). Since this has been so successful, I think we need to try the chart with potty training. I think Gus is afraid of having an accident in his underwear since he's had a couple already, so we're working on the concept of practice, and how it's okay to have accidents since it's part of the practice routine. I think we just need to get it into the routine, and he'll take to it. Right now, our routine is kind of chaotic, so we just need to make space for it.

I'm reading an amazing book, called something like "Between parent and child." I've decided to be a book club of one. I'm going to write about it here. Stay tuned.

I think I'm starting to hallucinate and am using words that don't make sense (and then erasing them, like I just did. I'll spare you my confused rambling).

Bed.

"I'm making you breakfast."

"I'm making you breakfast.", originally uploaded by jannacybill.

There really is an explanation
I just don't even know where to begin.
Long, long story short: John was taking a picture of a box of tampons for a project, Gus found said tampons, decided "who the heck needs expensive toys", started taking them apart.
I came by, asked what he was doing.
His answer?
"'m making you breakfast."
"Be careful, it's hot."

A day of firsts

I can't believe it!

First, Gustav talked the entire ride home. Unimpressive, you think? Not if you knew that it's the first time it's ever happened. I pepper that kid with questions all the way home, avoiding as many yes/no questions just to hear him talk. I didn't ask ONE probing question. I was soaking up every second of it.

Then....THEN... flash forward to dinner. I'm feeding Eli sweet potatoes. He keeps reaching for the little baby fork I'm using, so I finally give it to him with food on it. He stuck it in his mouth, took the food off, then pulled it back out. I took it, put food on it again, gave it to him, and he fed himself again. And again. And again. And again.

But WAIT, there's more. Then I take Eli in the bathroom to wash his face off, and as we're standing in front of the mirror looking at ourselves, I start saying "Hi" to him....and he starts waving his arm. Then he stops. So I start saying Hi again and also wave at him. Then he waves back. And we keep doing it, again, and again, and again.

And as if that wasn't exciting enough, today was the first time in Gustav's little life that he let us brush his teeth both this morning and this evening without crying. We started using a chart today, with stickers for each time he brushes, and it totally worked. Fingers crossed for tomorrow.

(Another first? Today was the first time in our six years together that John and I both forgot that today is our anniversary of the beginning of us...are we so busy and caught up in our lives that we've overlooked such an awesome day?)

He climbed a step yesterday. Lock everything up.

He did it. He's been working at standing up at the stairs, and he once he did that, he realized he could put his knee up. It was like Eli had done it before. He didn't get too far, but let me tell you, this eight-and-a-half month old (yes, he's eight months!) is ready to go. Everywhere.

At Eli's last appointment, he gained about 5 oz and grew 1/2 an inch, to reach 21 1/2 lbs (a bit below the 90th percentile) and 29 1/2 in (95th percentile). He had an ear infection over a week ago, and we stayed home together for a few days while Eli recuperated from his fever. That was heartbreaking.

While you still have to work hard to get Elias to laugh, he's offering up his heart-melting smile to any lady in a 5-foot range. He's got himself some baby mojo. Seriously.

The child is eating three meals a day, still nursing up a storm, and sleeping for more extended periods of time (on good nights). He's sleeping now. And I'm awake. And it's midnight. I am totally insane.

Now I can sign to my mom, John can show off fabulous dinners he's making, Gus can jump on the couch and get scolded by Grandma, and Eli can show off his mad crawling skillz.

Mom doesn't feel so far away anymore...
