Gustav 2004 Tour: Iowa

Last weekend was the first of many stops on the Gustav 2004 Tour, perhaps coming to a city near you?

First stop: Council Bluffs, IA (first time across state borders!)
Mode of transportation: Plane (a first!)

Travel is taken to another level when you have a baby...I knew it would, but it was still amazing to experience. Never before has a checklist become so very vital. When we were checking in (gone are the days of carrying on luggage), the woman at the counter asked where we were moving to. The amazing thing is that we didn't overpack too much. Perhaps that's subjective. Anyhoo...

Gus was wonderful throughout, a real sport. Babies bring out the oohs and awws in people, particularly when the father is carrying the baby. A woman behind us in line for ice cream suddenly thrust her hand at Gustav's belly and started playing coochie coo with Gus...and with John. Even though I was standing right there, I was brushed aside and my guys were fawned over (I'm being slightly melodramatic to make this an interesting read, but it did happen!).

When we were at the gate, waiting to board, we suddenly realized that we have at least five more years of pre-boarding, which is fantastic, particularly on Southwest Airlines.

Since the flight was an hour, Gus followed a schedule of eating 20 minutes on the way up, sleeping for 20 minutes, and eating 20 minutes on the way down.

We had such a relaxing time at my Mom's house. She seemed to thoroughly enjoy being a grandma and gave Gus lots and lots of love. We slept in and lazed about Saturday morning until it was almost time for the shower our neighbor Sue threw. The shower basically consisted of seeing friends we haven't seen in ages, eating a lot, passing Gus around as much as he would tolerate, and opening incredibly thoughtful gifts (I feel I should mention that thank yous for these and many gifts Gus has received are on their way, we really appreciate everyone's generosity!) While the shindig was over at four-ish, we stayed at Sue's until midnight, cooking dinner, napping in her fabulous chair and watching a movie. It was great!

Sunday was more parading of Gus and seeing friends. I never get to see everyone I want, the weekend's fly by when we're there. Monday was my Mom's work parade of Gus...overall, he was showered with love and welcomes. Grandma was so cute, directly introducing people to Gus. He just loves her, especially when she signs.

Now we're back at it. Yesterday was probably the best day back at work for me, even though our morning was slightly hectic (we're working on that). Tuesday was truly like a Monday for us...running around in the morning, sterilizing bottles, packing bags....then gettingto work and realizing I had forgotten vital components of my pump (total panic attack there...but a former pumper at work saved the day by walking home to get the parts for me to borrow), then I chipped a filling on a crouton, so now i'm eating on one side of my cheek...it became comical eventually. John had his own hecticness, too, but by Tuesday night things were beginning to calm and last night was even better. We even got a walk in with Zeppo!

Lots o' pictures.
